Ray Byars began keeping a very public accounting of rainfall in Blanco, Texas, in 1900. He stenciled in rainfall totals each month on large pieces of plywood and hung them on the wall of the hardware store right across the street from the courthouse. The totals were kept up to date until 1999. The building now houses the wonderful Redbud Cafe, whose owners say they have Byars’ stencils in safe keeping and will update the charts soon. If you’re in Blanco, go to the Redbud.
