Bishop Frederic Baraga (1797 1868) was called the “Snowshoe Priest” because he would travel by foot across what is now the Upper Peninsula of Michigan during its heavy winters. Bishop Baraga founded a mission in L’Anse, Michigan, where this statue stands in his honor. Baraga County has the highest level of unemployment and underemployment in the nation. Nearly 43% of the adults here are either looking for work, working part time or have given up the search for employment.
