Mississippi River floodwaters pushed into the Yazoo River and into this corn field in Satartia, MS, on Monday, May 16. 2011. The community of 96 was evacuated and this clearing of approximately 4,000 acres was completely flooded. Wave action and decay have freed parts of corn stalks collecting along the new shoreline. The water saturated soil does not allow enough oxygen to the plant; by the time the water is expected to recede, the stalks will be dead. The wheat was harvested two weeks earlier than scheduled from wet fields and will have to be dried before being used or sold.
