President Lyndon Johnson signed the Medicare bill July 30, 1965, in Independence, Missouri. The idea for a national health plan for the elderly was a long time coming, which is why Johnson signed the bill in the presence of former President Harry S. Truman and his wife, Bess. Vice President Hubert Humphrey stands behind the presidents. Lady Bird Johnson is to the left. Sen. Edward Long is to the far left.
