Richie Farmer says he may run for governor of the Commonwealth next year but that his “dream job” would be UK athletics director.

Farmer was a star on a beloved UK team in the 1990s and is now the state ag commissioner (and a Republican). In Kentucky, though, the closer you are to UK basketball tickets, the closer you are to real power. (Ag Commissioner Farmer above.)

• The Washington Post visits Iowa and an effort there to vote out state Supreme Court judges who ruled (unanimously) that same sex unions were legal in that state.

• The rural economy slowed in August, according to the new Rural Main Street Index. Hiring is weak. Home sales fell. Four in ten bankers surveyed said they thought it was likely that the country would drop back into a recession in 2011.
