John Edwards and Rural America: It’s the hair versus the message

07/03/2007
Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards is featured on the cover of the July 2007 issue of Men's Vogue. The former Senator, wearing a brown, worn field jacket, sits with his dog Bella on a pickup truck. Quintessential rural Americana is combined with Edwards's widely discussed good looks (and good hair). Such is the image of the Edwards campaign, the result of Edwards' rural upbringing and his ubiquitous "˜rural liason' Mudcat Saunders. (Is there another campaign with a rural liason? Is that like an ambassador?)

But does this picture, and for that matter this man, truly speak to rural America? Edwards's wealth and surprising indulgences seem to receive more media attention than his Rural Recovery Act and highly detailed policy-based campaign. In the Men's Vogue cover story, Joe Hagan seems to think Edwards is aligned with rural America"¦although, the Daily Yonder has to wonder, how many rural men — for that matter men in general — really read Men's Vogue?

It is undeniable that Edwards is bringing rural America to the attention of the nation. "According to Mudcat Saunders," Hagan reports, "the campaign isn't just aiming at poor rural whites in the South—but at poor rural whites across the country. "˜There's not a 50 cent difference in Bubba in Buncombe County, North Carolina, and Iowa or NewHampshire or wherever else. We are all from basically the same set of circumstances, and a rural campaign is not just a Southern campaign. It's about the heart and soul of rural America. And John believes strongly in it.'"

(Again, DY wonders, is "rural" in slick magazines simply a synonym for "poor"?)

Edwards campaigns as the candidate who can deliver rural and Southern states. As he was drinking a soda from Bojangles, Edwards told Hagan, "Oh, I'll win more than one Southern state. I will win more than one Southern state. You remember we had this conversation."

The article adds, "As much as he declares himself the antidote to George W. Bush, it's what he shares with the Texan—known for whacking brush in Crawford and using Lone Star State grammar instead of what he learned at Andover and Yale—that could be his best hope for winning: Southern authenticity." And rural authenticity, too?

Edwards the presidential candidate

It's difficult not to be skeptical about this guy's "authenticity". Two issues -- First, he's certainly a capable message creator and an articulate communicator, but that kind of goes with the turf of being a hugely successful trial lawyer. I've been told by some friends that trial lawyers are standing up for the little guy and some trial lawyers obviously do. But the trial bar industry is deeply flawed with its huge cut of settlements and the damage that it does to entrepreneurs and corporations that can penalize in a way that leads to job losses while only benefitting the lawyers and the ambulance chasing approach to attacking the health care industry-- physicians, hospitals, and drug makers-- that is not an insignificant part of the continuing meteoric rise in health care costs of American workers. A friend of mine and real estate lawyer in Kentucky told me recently that his oldest son was now practicing trial law in Nashville and that was ok with him as we are better with the distance. His follow on comment was telling, "He's now working on passing the bar exam in Kentucky so he can start suing people here too". Second, it just seems that the last thing we need in a president now is another "authentic" Southerner trying to practice his down home approach on the rest of the world. Whether it is fair or not, George Bush has poisoned the well on this approach to foreign policy. If what we see now is the real Edwards on the back of a pick up truck in jeans and a big ole, well, grin or not the real Edwards doesn't matter, because this image projection is what the rest of the world sees and appearances matter. Everyone can have their opinions on his approach to various issues and solutions he suggests, but those two are the big deals for me. And the haircut, silly, the big house, informative, but those are not really important. If there are Daily Yonder readers out there who take issue, set me straight.

Edwards

George W Bush was the first presidential candidate to install himself in office via lawyers and a legal dispute. He may have been elected as one person, but in many ways he has shown himself to be a completely different fellow. Even those who seek office without a law degree rely on one sooner or later. Senator Edwards has earned a lot of money by seeking redress for people who seldom gain respect from those who wronged them. It is preferable to me to elect a man who has earned his fortune in that way, than to elect a man who got his fortune by selling a baseball team given him by his fathers cronies. Say what you will about Edwards, his hair, even his dog, but there is no denying where he comes from. It's been a long time since John Edwards was middle class and rural, but clearly, at one time, he was. That makes him a far cry from someone who owns a ranch in Texas, but entertains Russian dictators on the family estate at Kennebunkport.

Edwards

Men's Vogue or not, John Edwards is who we need to lead our great nation. How can people question a person's authenticity, who has reached the "American Dream". Having personally seen Mr. Edwards twice, shook his hand and spoken to him, I can personally vouch for him. Being from the "Show Me" state, I am not easily impressed. John Edwards impresses me very much! When he is speaking you can see the passion in his eyes and the compasion in his heart. Who else is willing to even speak about poverty, health care, and has activily worked to improve the lives of working class americans. By helping workers organize and have a say in there wages, benefits and working conditions John is keeping democracy alive. This strategy will also be used to keep Family Farmers going strong and keep CAFO's from ruining our country. When we loose our working class, our family farms and forget about the poor, we loose track of the values our nation was founded on. We must stop the war on working americans, we must elect a President with personal experience, we must elect John Edwards!
