Urban-centric federal programs make it hard for rural nonprofits to compete. A president with a rural point of view could help.
Smithsonian officials hired Kevin Gover for the top job at the new National Museum of the American Indian. Seven years earlier, Gover and other federal officials were found in contempt of court for destroying documents in a landmark suit filed by American Indians.
Sen. Max Baucus of Montana challenged foundations to double their donations in rural America, but it likely will take pressure from rural nonprofits -- and more -- for giving patterns to change.
